30 Days with Mary – Day 28

Mary Most Holy, mother of sinners

Mary is the mother of those sinners who want to convert. For this reason, she cannot help but to show sympathy towards them. It is as if Mary herself feels the suffering of those afflicted souls. The Canaanite woman upon asking the Lord to deliver her daughter from the devil that tormented her, said to Jesus: “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon” (Mt. 15:22).

Since the woman’s daughter is the one who suffered the devil’s torments, one would imagine that the woman would have cried out, “Lord, have pity on my daughter!” However, she beseeched mercy not for her daughter, but rather for herself. Thus, in a similar manner, explains Ricardo de S. Lourenço, Our Lady petitions God when she intercedes for anyone who relies on her aid.

We can imagine Our Lady’s supplication: My Lord, this poor soul in sin is my own soul; show compassion, not so much for the soul itself, but for me, who am Your mother.
